We held our mock Caldecott last night! The winners:
THE LITTLE YELLOW LEAF, Carin Berger (medal) ABE'S HONEST WORDS, Kadir Nelson (honor) WE ARE THE SHIP, Kadir Nelson (honor--tied with above) A RIVER OF WORDS, Melissa Sweet (honor)
Others titles that received votes: THAT BOOK WOMAN, David Small MY FRIEND THE STARFINDER, Stephen Gammell THE HOUSE IN THE NIGHT, Beth Krommes AMANDINA, Sergio Ruzzier FRED STAYS WITH ME, Tricia Tusa
We are a group of graduates of the Simmons College master's program in children's literature. It was a feisty discussion! We were sad that so many wonderful picture books were ineligible this year because their illustrators were not U.S. citizens or residents. We believe this criterion ought to be revisited--along with the rule that asks the judges to focus on artwork only (since we believe the text and the artwork of a picture book to be integrally connected). Finally, we felt there were many books this year that deserved a Caldecott honor award but few that rose to the top and emerged as true medal contenders. WE ARE THE SHIP was defended vehemently by some as worthy of the gold, but others disagreed.
