YA novel, and about as far from poetry as you can get: Whirlwind, by David Klass, FSG. Definitely written by a screen writer: action and dialogue driven, with great visual descriptives. My kids couldn't put it down, so as far as books to hook reluctant readers, that's a favorite (I read the first page to see why they couldn't stop, and got sucked in, too). In terms of mastery, I echo the masses on M.T. Anderson's Octavian II.
