I read - and enjoyed very much - a biography written in poetry:
"Becoming Billie Holiday" by Carole Weatherford, illustrated by Floyd Cooper. Each poem is titled with a song Billie Holiday immortalized. The book tells the story of her life up until (if memory serves) her twenties. There is an author's note about why the biographer leaves off at that point, and also a further reading and listening list.
I enjoyed many of the other books already mentioned, but I have not seen mention of "Alvin Ho: Allergic to Girls, School, and Other Scary Things" by Lenore Look. I just loved this one!
Regards, Alison
