[CCBC-Net] FAVORITE BOOKS

I thought The Surrender Tree: Poems of Cuba's Struggle for Freedom by Engle was outstanding-- the best book of poetry I read this year. I don't have it with me, or I'd say more.

I also enjoyed Nye's Honeybee

and Tracie Vaughn Zimmer's 42 Miles-- a brief (73 page) novel-in-verse. If you haven't seen it, the 42 miles in the title refers to the distance JoEllen's parents now live from each other. JoEllen is a city girl during the week at her mom's and lives on a farm on the weekends with her dad. The text is surprisingly rich in imagery and pathos, considering how accessible the text is. And the mixed-collage illustrations are just right.
