I was also "blown away" by The Hunger Games and drew stares when I released an audible sigh after the last sentence that stated "end of Book 1". I am anticipating and dreading the next installment.
Other favorites
Seer of Shadows by Avi A wonderfully scary story.
The Underneath by Kathi Appelt This is a one of a kind book that is clearly the work of a gifted writer. The cover, however is very misleading. Looks like a warm, simple dog story and it certainly is not that.
Diamond Willow by Frost So unique in format.....being widely read by all types of readers in my middle school.
Princess Ben by Catherine Gilbert Murdock I appreciated the challenging vocabulary that perfectly fit the story. Although this book had a strong, nontraditional female narrator, it was quite different from Murdock's Dairy Queen books. I also appreciate the body image theme that speaks to many girls of today.
By far my favorite book of the year is Gary Schmidt's Trouble. I would love for this book to be an all community read in my town. What a powerful, important contribution to literature for young adults!

Every December we invite members of the CCBC-Net community to tell us about their favorite books for children and teens published over the past twelve months.
What books published in 2008 stand out to you? What are you recommending for the young readers in your life? What are your must-reads from 2008? We look forward to hearing from you!
