Ellen Tarry died on 9/23, three days short of her l02nd birthday.
How sad to learn of Ellen's death. If anyone finds a COMPLETE obituary please note it?
I knew Ellen well in the late l960's when I worked at Bank Street in Harlem after receiving my Master's Degree there.
Her book, YOUNG JIM; THE EARLY YEARS OF JAMES WELDON JOHNSON (Dodd, Mead, 1967) was the very first book I reviewed for THE NEW YORK TIMES BOOK REVIEW
(1/21/1968). Three days after the review appeared the very distinguished Ellen, came to my office and autographed my copy which I treasure to this day. Although we were friends before, we remained even closer after that encounter.
At that time Ellen worked with Intergoup Relations as a Specialist with the Dept. of Housing and Urban Development, in Region I of NYC.
Such beautiful memories of a beautiful human being.
