[CCBC-Net] Astonishing Octavian

I totally agree! Especially with this statement: " It seems to me that we're looking at a small, elite audience for Octavian." I'm wondering if this is indeed a "teen" book. From the circulation stats in my library and the meaty discussion here, I'm thinking this book may be more adult fare.

At the same time, I also agree with the poster (I think it was Nancy S.) who said we should offer quality books to teens despite the fact that librarians may need to actively promote the title. However, we should be prepared for the fact that they will likely turn away. I suspect this is why our teen selector only bought a few copies.

Last night, I had an interesting conversation with my 14-year old daughter concerning popular books vs. quality/award books. We were discussing the hype around the Twilight series and if she thought this title truly deserves the cultish following gathered around it. She read the first three volumes and is now bored with it.

My daughter, who also read Harry P. in 3rd grade and still wasn't converted after two volumes, quipped, "The really good books don't get that much publicity, they just get enjoyed quietly." LOL, today's youth!

While I won't dispute that the book is well-written, this is not a style of writing that young adults take to readily. Since I am at an elementary

school, I read a small portion of the book aloud to my own daughter, an honor student, who had recently graduated from college, to get her take on the book. She emphatically said she'd never have gotten through one page and didn't see how I managed to read the whole book. Honestly, I usually love historical fiction but I did have difficulty forcing myself to plod through the book until I was near the end. It seems to me that we're looking at a small, elite audience for Octavian. Gail Dent
