I've used _Lightning Thief_ for at least three semesters now (in conjunction with _D'Aulaires' Book of Greek Myths_) and most of my students love it, even those who don't like reading or who dislike fantasy. Several ask if they can read the next book in the series as part of their outside reading assignment; in the past, approximately 1/4 of the class have sampled _Sea of Monsters_ even though it wasn't easily available from our university library.
We also look at Percy in relation to Lord Raglan's formula for a hero; although we don't read Harry Potter as a class text, there's usually some discussion of parallels between the two books (which can lead back into examining ideas about heroes and quests).
