Hello, authors and editors. I am writing on behalf of the 2009 Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC) Preconference Planning Committee. We are putting together an exhilarating American Library Association (ALA) preconference on intellectual freedom. The day-long event, Meeting the Challenge: Practical Tips and Inspiring Tales on Intellectual Freedom, will take place on July 10, 2009, just prior to the American Library Association annual meeting in Chicago. The preconference will focus on providing librarians with information they need to respond to materials challenges as well as encouragement in their ongoing work to uphold and defend the First Amendment rights of the children they serve.
We are putting together a booklet that will feature quotes and comments from authors of challenged books. The booklet will be given to all attendees (about 125 are expected) and we will be reading selected quotations throughout the day.
If you are aware that your book(s) has been challenged, and would be willing to provide us with a quote for the preconference and the booklet, please email me at heatherm at dpls.us.
