I've seen several posts about board books as a type of picture books. I'm not sure if these have been mentioned, but my girls preferred board books with real photos, especially when they could hold the books themselves. For instance, there might be a page about the color red with photos of various red objects. DK makes many of these. My girls enjoyed hearing the names of all these objects, and then were delighted when they could point to the objects and name them themselves. Our library actually has very few of these board books, and I had to purchase most of the ones we read myself.
