I have a few favorite titles: Leslie Patricelli has done some wonderful things, Yummy Yucky! and Quiet Loud! are favorites of mine, that tackle basic concepts with an agreeable baby protagonist. The illustrations, with solid black outlines and bright colors, have a simplicity that works well with actual babies, balanced with a nice, painterly texture that adds some visual interest.
And I love a new board book called My Animals by Xavier Deneux. Each page features a picture of singular animal (all of the usual suspects, wild and domestic, are represented) along with it's name, in high-contrast black and white, with tiny spots of bright color. And careful use of die-cut circles in every page add a level of cleverness. But it's the really winning animals themselves that make the book.
