....Bartoletti creates a tense and resonant work of fiction about a teen?s political and personal awakening after leaving the Hitler youth and deciding he must challenge his government?s oppression...
This theme has been explored in so many compelling books set in Germany during WWII- Daniel, Half Human and the Good Nazi by David Chotjewitz; translated by Doris Orgel come immediately to my mind.
Many years ago I read Bright Candles; a novel of the Danish resistance. Publisher New York, Harper Row,1974. I can still recall details of this book. Since then there have been so many books, not the least of which is Lois Lowry's Number the Stars.
Pair this with the biography: The Yellow Star: the legend of King Christian X of Denmark by Carmen Agra Deedy; illustrated by Henri S?rensen. Peachtree, 2000.
An international viewpoint can be introduced with the translation The Boys from St. Petri by Bjarne Reuter; translated from the Danish by Anthea Bell. Dutton, c1994
Hitler's Canary by Sandi Toksvig. Roaring Brook Press, 2007, 2005. Bright Candles; a novel of the Danish resistance. Though a work of fiction is is based on stories the author's father told her about his own childhood, and can be used to introduce the genre of memoirs.
Although I've learned my lesson about recommending a book I haven't, I did just read a review for Honey Cake by Joan Betty Stuchner; illustrated by Cynthia Nugent. Random House, 2008 and the reviewer mentioned that it was good for a child not quite ready for Number the Stars-has anyone read this yet?
