[CCBC-Net] Bigotry--now and then

The Palin gossip reminded me of the Scholastic rep's "This book and author aren't for your school's students"--at a Wisconsin Teachers of English convention workshop on Vietnam authors and books a while back.

It was a cut on Walter D. Myers and his Vietnam book FALLEN ANGELS. We high school classroom English teachers from the WASP suburbs were trying to order Myers' book--when the Scholastic rep was pushng humor offerings and "more easily purchased right here at the convention" items by Scholastic. I made a
"hey, quit the bigotry" written report to the company--and cancelled the Scholastic magazine order from my budget. They wrote to my boss/principal to report that I was insubordinate and needed to be reined in.

It's been years since that incident--but the smug little personal cuts WERE AND ARE NOT NOW APPRECIATED. Rein in the LACK OF HUMOR, please!
