I loved that book, too -- along with others in the series.
The mention of books about road trips reminds me of two favorite picture books -- John Coy's _Night Driving_, with stunning black-and-white illustrations by Peter McCarthy, perfectly capturing the mood of late-night drives on near-deserted highways, and Vera and Jennifer Williams' _Stringbean's Trip to the Shining Sea_, told through a series of colorful and lively postcards. (Many years ago, the Library of Congress had an exhibit of some of the preliminary artwork for _Stringbean_, showing how Williams had experimented with design for some of the illustrations, and I remember marvelling at how many ways she'd sketched one of the scenes before settling on the final version.)
