Tove Jansson, the Finnish author of the Mommintroll books, has a lovely, haunting book called THE SUMMER BOOK. It's in paperback now, availlable again thanks to the New York Review Books. Sophia, who is six, spends the summer with her father and grandmother on a tiny island in the Gulf of Finland. The connection between the grandmother and the child is honest, fresh, funny, always thought provoking. Much deeper than it seems at first. For adults. It will make you want to find such an island.
