As a child, I loved fantasy novels where a change of location -- usually in connection with a summer vacation -- led to discovery of another world. An oldie, long OP, is Dan Wickenden's _Amazing Vacation_; Edward Eager also used the concept in _Magic by the Lake_ and _The Time Garden_ (and twisted it in _Seven-Day Magic_ and _Half Magic_, where a stay-at-home summer vacation becomes more exciting through the discovery of a magical artifact).
