I usually love stories that connect journey (in this case, vacation journeys) to self-discovery. Here are two good examples:
Running Maya, by Uma Krishnaswami.
12-year old Maya is anything but excited about spending part of her summer in Chennai, India, but her grandfather has passed away and she must go with her mother, to sell the family house. By being exposed to the complexities of her mother's native culture she ends up learning "different ways of accepting marriage, of being a teenager, of growing old."
The Wanderer, by Sharon Creech
Sophie and Cody's summer vacation consists of sailing across the ocean from Connecticut to Ireland with a third cousin and three uncles, to visit their grandfather. The story is told through their daily journal entries and their contrasting views on life on board the boat and on past events are fascinating. The journey affects them all but is particularly meaningful to Sophie, who must come to terms with her past. A very memorable story!
