An additional treasure that readers of this list would find interesting: the catalog for a traveling exhibit from the Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art and The Katonah Museum of Art. CHILDREN SHOULD BE SEEN: THE IMAGE OF THE CHILD IN AMERICAN PICTURE-BOOK ART is by Leonard Marcus, Jane Bayard Curley, and Caroline Ward, guest curators of the exhibit, which is currently showing at the Los Angeles Public Library (through January 11, 2009).
This elegantly designed book features beautiful reproductions of the 83 pieces of art displayed in the exhibits and a brief, lucid text by the three curators. They discuss picture book art in a historical context, what contemporary picture books tell us about children's emotional lives, how picture books reflect the complex makeup of American society, and the future of the picture book. It may be available from other sources but I got my copy from the LAPL store: _http://www.lfla.org/cgi-bin/store/204.html_

I think this book provides an additional context for thinking about contemporary picture book publishing that is richly relevant to our interesting discussion here.
