Hello,
I'm looking forward to hearing you, Leonard, speak about GOLDEN LEGACY on September 12 at the Aurora Public Library in Illinois. I plan to read it prior to that date, so if you addressed in your book the questions I pose below, please ignore them here.
Your comment about THE POKY LITTLE PUPPY sent me on a search through five children's literature textbooks that I've collected. There were a few references to Golden Books, but not one mention of that famous puppy. As a small child, I loved the story and the illustrations. The copies that I've seen as an adult do not live up to my memory of the interior illustrations. I still see them with vivid, saturated colors. Today's book's pictures are washed out. Also, I could have sworn Tenggren had included a depiction of that spider. But the currently available editions have no spider, and looking through the book, I can't see how there ever was one. Is this a case of a child's vivid imagination creating in her mind a large, Tenggrenesk spider? Or was there one in the first edition that was removed because it was deemed to be too scary?
Thanks so much for your generous sharing of information and insight!
Sheila Welch
