I did Barbara's NYC radio show many times. My saddest moment was her standing in line in the front of a hotel coffee shop just prior to my scooting along to a banquet ballroom for a N/C fete. I asked her, "Why are you going to eat now when the fete begins in just a few minutes." She was dressed to the nines. "I wasn't invited this year," she told me, sadly. "I'll go hear the speeches when the dinner is over." She almost broke down and cried. THIS from a woman who gave so much to ALA.

"Take my ticket, " I begged of her. "Sit at the table with Harper. Tell them I had a headache and couldn't make it."
  Of course she refused.
My heart ached all that night.
  Such tales.
