One of the things that has always impressed me about Donovan's book is its ending: after a rift occasioned by the minor sexual incidents between them, the boys' decide not to worry about ?them and not to let them ruin their friendship. ?They don't seem to conclude that they're either gay or straight. I've always thought that was an important and very healthy viewpoint given the era and the fact that Donovan's was the first kids' book to broach the subject.
