The exchange about I'll Get There. It Better Be Worth the Trip?is fascinating! I've mentioned I'll Get There many times as being the first YA to include homosexuality and I think many of us consider it and 1969, when it was published, as the beginning of gay literature for kids. (1969, of course, was also the year of the Stonewall Riots, usually said to be the beginning of the modern gay rights movement--an interesting sidelight although there's no real connection that I know about--and certainly none if Donovan was amused at its being considered a "gay novel.")
