[CCBC-Net] Book review blogs

In fact, the American Library Association-Children's Book Council Joint Committee recently discussed this very question. As some of you may know, the CBC puts out a list of abbreviations referring to review sources that publishers use in their backlist catalogs (those who still print such things), Web sites, etc. For example, a book reviewed favorably by an ALA publication may carry an "A" notation in its catalog entry; one reviewed favorably by an International Reading Association publication may carry an "R."

The question posed by CBC this past year: "Should blogs be included on this list?" depends on the answer to the question posed by KT, and we asked the ALSC Children's Collection Management Discussion Group to address it last year. Here are the results of their fruitful discussion:

------------------------------------------------------------------------
-------------- Several people attending regularly (daily!) read various blogs. Most have their favorites that they check each morning. There were probably an equal number of people at the meeting who do not read blogs. The blog readers use the information posted as 'another tool' in their selection work. They said they often learn about books that they missed in the professional journals. Many felt that reading blogs enhanced and increased their use of professional review journals. More than one person stated that they read the blog, checked the professional reviews on TSIII, Title Tales, etc and then made a decision about purchasing or not. The blog readers liked the interactivity of the blog structure. If they had a question about the review, or disagreed with the blogger, they could post a comment and start a conversation. Favorite blogs mentioned include:

A lot of people have shared their favorite children's and YA literature blogs, offering their rationales for reading them. It's nice to see such variety and enthusiasm for the blogs that have sprung up in the past few years.

I'm wondering if anyone uses the blog reviews of new books in library book selection. Do they influence what you purchase? How do you think blog reviews measure up to reviews from professional review journals?
