Another thought about Jacqueline Woodson's use of snow in a scene of violently conflicting emotional content (which I just read this morning, here in the sunny Midwest where things are drying but still bad in many places): In *If You Come Softly, *Jeremiah runs through the park, "white with snow ... brilliant but quiet." and dribbles his basketball along snow-covered paths, so happy that he's totally unaware of the threat behind him . . . a wonderfully well created scene.
