I'd like to start off with a fan letter of sorts, Ms. Woodson. I have been mentoring a young girl for six years, and during that time I have introduced her to many books in one way or another. So far, she has "connected" with only two books, Ginny Wolff's Make Lemonade, and your If You Come Softly. After she'd read your book she told me, "I cried. I couldn't believe I cried over a book!" So, for the second time, I bought her her own copy of a book. She's had to move from the house her dad shares with one girlfriend or another back to her grandma's and out again several times over the last few years, but these books have gone with her each time, even when her other possessions have been lost in limbo. Keep writing, please, for her, and for other girls like her. Sally Derby
