"complicated and whole" These words really do describe why Woodson's work is so powerful. Dean was talking about how marked up his copy of "Feathers" is and mine is the same way. I found one passage that I think speaks to how we are characterizing her work. It's on page 14 and Frannie's talking about the sign for believe. She explains how it's a combination of think and marry. She then goes on to explain how she loves the word, the idea that to believe is "to have a thought in your head and then to marry it, to take it into your heart forever." It seems to me that Woodson believes every word she writes in this spirit.
