I, too, hope others find Dean Schneider's interview with Jacqueline Woodson in the May 2008 Book Links. When asked about what she would say to readers who find books too sad, Woodson replies in a really interesting way, challenging readers to look at how complicated sadness can be, how most of us experience it as part of our days, along with other feelings, making us "complicated and whole." She offers ways to see the bigger picture. And I loved reading aloud Woodson's thoughts on the gift of another day (I suppose another name for hope, which she says she learned from her grandmother, at the end of a children's literature class I taught this spring.
