I continue to teach the first two of these books (Mel and Locomotion) in my college-level children's literature classes. If You Come Softly continues to be a favorite among the teens I share it with in both my personal and professional life. I've been trying to talk myself out of using Mel b/c it is older now and it is some times hard for my students to get their hands on. What have we heard about this book being challenged or going out of print? Of all the ways I've entered into discussion of LGBTQ issues w/ my students, Mel continues to "work" best for me. I love hearing about when first-time readers figured out what was coming or if they found out right along with Mel. With Locomotion, I continue to be amazed by how students are amazed that Lonnie didn't actually write it. I see them sitting there discussing it and checking the back of the book over and over to confirm that it wasn't "real." I'd say that's quite a testament to Woodson's craft. Has
anyone besides me tried to read the first kiss scene in If You Come Softly aloud. I think it's chapter 11 (maybe 13?), but it starts w/ them deciding to cut classes and ends w/ them in Central Park (oh, that sweet Snicker bar sharing!) and I've tried repeatedly to get through it orally in front of a class but I just can't fight back the tears. Why is that!?!? Surely, it's partly just my crazy self but it's also the way Woodson's imagery and sincerity comes through.

I have lots to say about lots of her other books (particularly The Other Side and Feathers) but I'll hold off for now. Can't wait to hear everyone's favs! Les
