A gay friend gave me Totally Joe by Howe to read, and I enjoyed it and put it on my buying list. It's very funny.
The other book I read a while back that someone just mentioned was My last skirt, which was inspired by the fact that women were in the army during the Civil War, pretending to be men. The author imagined the rest of the life of this particular person, and I felt she did it very well. The woman decides to continue life as a man after the war. It was a moving and sad tale. The author imagines that she loses touch with her family after coming to America from Ireland, then she falls in love while she is in the army, and if I remember correctly, he dies in the war. She ends her life living alone as a man and is discovered to be a woman after her death. It's worth your time.
