Jane and Nancy, thanks for such a provocative discussion! I can see both sides of the issue and I appreciate the concerns and arguments both of you have raised.
Kids grow up with all sorts of mixed messages about gender and sexuality in our society. You never know what a reader is going to take from a particular book at a particular time in their lives. I think the most we can do is to offer a range of possibilities for them to explore through art and literature.
