As far as picture books go these are good titles to share with children ages 4-8:
The White Swan Express by Jean Davies Okimoto and Elaine M. Aoki, illus. by Meilo So (Clarion, 2002) - Four very different families, including a lesbian couple and a single woman, awake to the same realization: that this is the day they will travel to China to meet their adopted babies.
Mom and Mum are Getting Married, by Ken Setterington, illus. by Alice Priestley (Second Story Press, 2004) -This excellent book was published shortly after marriage was legalized in Canada.
And Tango Makes Three, by Peter Parnell and Justin Richardson, illus. by Henry Cole (Simon & Schuster Children's Publ., 2005) Based on a true story about two male penguins in New York City's Central Park Zoo who are given the chance to raise their own baby penguin.
King & King and sequel, King & King & Family by Linda de Haan and Stern Nijland (Tricycle, 2002). A fairytale about a prince who falls in love and marries another prince and starts a family. King & King has been translated into many languages.
Heather Has Two Mommies, by Lesl?a Newman, illus. by Diane Souza About a preschooler with two moms who discovers that there are all kinds of parents in the world, and in her classroom: gay parents, single parents, stepparents, adoptive parents, etc. First published in 1989, a time when children's books that reflected nontraditional families didn't exist, this title was a pioneer.
