Another little kid favorite--a new one: UNCLE BOBBY'S WEDDING by Sarah S. Brannen (G.P Putnam's Sons, 2008)
In response to the comment about few books re bisexual teens-- very true: In addition to a few stories and to M.E. Ker''s novel "HELLO," I LIED (1997), there's also Sara Ryan's EMPRESS OF THE WORLD (2001) and LUCKY by Eddie De Oliveira (2004). There's a lack of books about transgender teens, too. Again there are a few stories, including "Boi" by Julie Anne Peters in her collection grl2grl (2007). Her National Book Award finalist novel LUNA (2004) is the first YA novel with a transgender teen as a major character, and Ellen Wittlinger's PARROTFISH (2007) is the first with a transgender main character. An important secondary character in WHAT HAPPENED TO LANI GARVER? by Carol Plum-Ucci
(2002) might be transgender--but he also might be an angel, or gay.
There's also a need for more LGBT books about Hispanic characters and African American characters. Alex Sanchez (The Rainbow Boys series, THE GOD BOX, SO HARD TO SAY) and Jacqueline Woodson (THE DEAR ONE, FROM THE NOTEBOOKS OF MELANIN SUN, THE HOUSE YOU PASS ON THE WAY) have given us some--thank you!--but it would be wonderful to have more!
One more and then I'll shut up- HERO by Perry Moore (2007) is a real departure and a wonderful one. It's a super-hero story and a mystery rolled into one with a man character who's gay, but the story's about his being an apprentice to a league of super-heros to which his father once belonged--and learning a lot about life in general plus his own family--universals, again!
