I'm embarrassed to admit that I come to poetry with a bit of dread. Maybe this feeling stems from long ago English classes that I hated even though I loved to read. If I can let myself go and just read for the rhythm and sound of the words, I find that I can enjoy myself, for the most part, although I usually have the feeling that I'm not doing enough work. [I have been having a rather nice time lately with Dylan Thomas though, and I'm not really intimidated by him for some reason. I think it is because the sounds of the language is so incredibly beautiful.]
I just bought Lee B. Hopkins' book on poetry that someone else just mentioned, Poetry matters, is the title, I think. I found it a great introduction for people who dislike poetry or for teachers who don't know much about it. I handed it on to an enthusiastic library user (3rd grade teacher). The time is right. We are about to have two poets laureate--one from the US, one from the UK--at our school at the first time
(the first time this has happened ever, they tell me), Jack Prelutsky and Michael Rosen. It will be cool to have a rather big buzz, press and all, for two poets!
