James Howe's, The Misfits, is a powerful middle grade novel which tells the story of a group of seventh grade friends known as the "Gang of Five" who, after experiencing repeated taunting, decide to run for student council on a
"no name-calling" platform and to institute a "No Name-Calling Day" at their school. This book inspired the GLSEN (Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network) project NO NAME-CALLING WEEK -- "an annual week of educational activities aimed at ending name-calling of all kinds and providing schools with the tools and inspiration to launch an on-going dialogue about ways to eliminate bullying in their communities."
