I, too, relished reading aloud to my kids when they were small. Unfortunately, as soon as they could read themselves, they stopped the ritual. ("I want to read it myself.") Not only that, they wanted to read by themselves! Alas, the consequences of fostering independence in one's progeny. Another is that now, in their 20s, they live thousands of miles away and it's been years since we have all spent Christmas together. However when last we did, I brought out JRR Tolkeins' Father Christmas Letters, an old favorite, and we sat around the fire as I read it, once again, to them -- and the magic was still there.
