Kia ora,
I'm a lurker but must endorse comments about Jim Trelease. My 'lurkdom' is evidenced by the difficulty I have had in posting and apologise for the duplication that is somewhere out there!!
I heard Jim Trelease speak to teachers in St Catharines, Ontario -Maple Leaf land- and was very much motivated by his presentation. I keenly sought to find titles he recommended, not only in the edition of his book current at the time but also those that had appeared in earlier editions. My classes enjoyed listening to the results of his suggestions. Jim certainly had his finger on the pulse of what was very good and that students would enjoy. Even though I taught grades 6 to 8 I also included picture books besides novels in my daily reading. I can still recall the students' reactions to Half a Moon Inn.
As a previous poster also mentioned I had two or three class sets of some novels so that students could read along. This also allowed the opportunity for some of the students to be the readers.
