Now nearing retirement, I tried to recall teachers reading aloud in my elementary years. Granted, it is eons ago (remember, I had a pet Pterodactyl) but I do not ever recall a teacher in Gr. 1-8 reading a novel to the class. Perhaps it was part of being in a one-room school. I can't imagine that the teacher ever had the time to devote to this. Or perhaps it was because I am so strongly a visual person. If I did not have the book in front of me so I could read the words, it would have been totally lost on me. Of course, if I had the book, I would have been reading at least 50 pages ahead of the teacher! Did I mention I'm an impatient visual learner? Perhaps that is why my parents read aloud to me daily up to the point that I became a proficient reader. After that we all read our own books. Reading was encouraged and modeled in our home (yes, you can read while washing the dishes by hand) and I am sure that was part of the reason that my sisters and I are all still avid readers.
I am pleased that the teachers in my pk-5 area all read daily to their students. However, I do think that having silent reading time daily
(and many do) is just as important.
