OMG--Jean, I couldn't agree more! How lucky are the kids in your classes!

Celeste,
What if teachers, at least in grades K through grade 8, read aloud from a book of their choice on at least one occasion a week....even a single chapter? (It's amazing how many devout middle school "non-readers" become quite intrigued with a book which is enthusiastically read aloud to them. Many of today's kids have little experience of the oral mode without the visual, which allows much more freeplay of the imagination.) And what if parents/grandparents used car time to occasionally read aloud to all passengers (no I-pod headphones allowed, no DVD players) from a book of the reader's choice -- assuming the reader is not also the driver? (When not doing a read-aloud, adult family members could do a wonderful narrative on the benefits of looking out of the windows on family excursions and sharing what they observe!)
I would also suggest some regular Book Talks in the classrooms as a means to get these wonderful tomes into active circulation. Amazing what a good three-minute bit of PR can do for a fine book which was languishing on the shelf.
For what it's worth, from a middle school library,
Jean Hildreth Luxemburg-Casco Middle School
