Pamela,

I do the non-fiction collection development for San Francisco Public Library and I most definitely look at the AAAS-SB&F winners. Usually, however, I have already bought them by the time I see the award winners. I also read all the major review journals to see what I may need to search for (SLJ, LJ, Booklist, BCCB, Hornbook, SB&F, PW, etc.)

Since I also review non-fiction for ACL (Assoc. of Children's Librarians of N. CA) as well as receive many review copies from the publishers at SFPL, I tend to get a look at a good portion of the crop of non-fiction titles. Since science is a personal interest of mine, I often take these books home to read.

My fellow collection development librarian, Grace Ruth, and I also make a point of looking at all the other winners you mentioned to see if we need to pick them up or re-consider them for purchase. It is a lot of fun to see what has been chosen and always satisfying when it is already in the collection.

As a nonfiction writer, I would be very curious to know how teachers and librarians decide what books to purchase. Do you skim the review magazines for starred reviews? I assume after ALA announces the awards and the Notables list, people would buy many of the honored books. What about other awards, like Bank Street, Orbis Pictus, ASPCA's Henry Bergh, Jane Addams, and Golden Kite? I'm especially interested in how the AAAS-SB&F Prize winners are received. This award has categories by age group, so a picture book is not forced to compete with a YA. Also, the backgrounds of the judges lean more toward science than the humanities, which seems appropriate for a science book award.
