[CCBC-Net] Woodson's Feathers

I really loved it when I read it, as did my 11-year-old daughter. I chose it as a Mock Newbery book for my group of 5th graders, really unsure of how they would respond. They liked it much more than I expected. Some reactions were: that it started slow but got better; that it didn't have any plot (but one of those people also wanted to know more about what happened after the end of the book!); they felt they could relate to Frannie and her position in her family; they particularly liked the description of the relationship between Frannie and Sean; and they seemed interested in Jesus boy and his way of dealing with kids in the school.

For me personally, there was something glorious about the writing towards the end of the book: I don't have a copy with me, so I can't put my finger on the particular passage that had me wowed. When I was in elementary school I had a close friend who was deaf, and Woodson took me right back to the heart of that experience. I felt that she really got it.

I'd love to hear others' thoughts on this book. I'm about 1/3 through it and loving the writing but having mixed reactions to plot and concept. (I may not be the right reader for the book right now, which is another reason others' perspectives are so enlightening.) Has anyone read it to or used it with children?
