I agree completely with Norma Jean. "Informational" is deadly. It's bad enough so many young people think research is cell-achingly boring. To send them to an "informational book" is to do both the book and the reader a disservice. Information is wonderful, sure, but we're trying to engage the minds and hearts of kids most of whom spend more time with 3-4 inch handheld devices than books. Everyone worries so about a cover grabbing a young person's interest. How about a label? We no doubt put more emphasis than we should on
"winners," so at least let's have the broadest array in our top awards. And for those concerned about recognizing the importance of visuals, there's Russell Freedman's Lincoln: a PHOTOBIOGRAPHY, happily a Newbery.
