Cassie,
I have to disagree with your statement that this is a compromise year. Wednesday Wars had Newbery buzz before it actually came out. While it was nitpicked to death on this list serve, many of chatboards and mock awards picked it. And it is an enjoyable read. And Hugo Cabret was a leader from the startfor a Caldecott. The real question for it was whether or not the Newbery committee would recognize it too. And Elijah of Buxton was favorite too. And Feathers seemed to be gaining momentum in the past few weeks.
A compromise year is when the choices come out of nowhere and people are saying, "What were they thinking?"
While my own personal list for winners would have been slightly different, I can clearly see why the committee made the choices they made.
