I just finished this discussion offlist, so I'll clarify onlist that my remark *wasn't* intended as a criticism of the people who served on the award committee. (The original post had a line to that effect but when I condensed it, that line was lost.) I apologize to any committee members who interpreted it that way and (like most other readers, I suspect) am very grateful to those who put in long hours and much thought on the awards.

Part of my frustration over the Geisel may be because I expected it to be something that it doesn't seem to be (which is an error in my perception, not the committee's selection, since their choices clearly fit the criteria for the award). I think that the beginner book -- that limited-vocabulary, smaller size, less heavily-illustrated format -- is a crucial stage and one that seems to be growing in popularity even as the category is overwhelmed with titles that vary greatly in quality. That's why I was elated when I learned about the award. That its definitions and criteria don't fit my expectations or desires isn't a reflection on the committee, and I again apologize if my post suggested that it was.
