Here in Australia, the CBC (Children's Book Council) Awards dominate. A shortlisting guarantees another (often bigger) print run and many libraries and schools put the shortlist on standing order (immediate purchase). There are state Premier's Awards, but often they are only taken notice of in that particular state, and few of these are for younger books - mostly for YA. Authors like the state awards as the prize money is bigger than the CBC! There has been a lot of grumbling over the years about the influence of the CBCs - what about all the great books that don't get shortlisted? Is this the case with the Newbery and Printz? That they dominate the news and the marketplace? Do your other awards in the US redress the imbalance a little?
