After serving on Newbery (2002) and Notables (2008), I have learned at least one thing: just because a book has not made it to the lists does not automatically mean that it is not a really really fine piece of work. It definitely doesn't mean that the Committees deliberately try to exclude certain titles. The Committees are looking from so many angles at so many books, and the members of each Committee also have such different ideas and tastes, one can never really draw simple conclusions based on the final choices.
