My Parent/Son book group met last night and our book, chosen before Christmas by me, was THE WEDNESDAY WARS. The group is made up of students in grades 4-8 and their parents, who must accompany their sons
(we are an all boy school) and have read the book. There was universal agreement that this is one of the best books they've ever read.
While all of the comments were positive, some that I think need sharing include:
The level of complexity, warriors in Treasure Island and Shakespeare and at Holling's school and far away, in Vietnam.
The quality of mercy and those places were it does "rain" and those places where it doesn't.
The secrets in terms of learning Holling's sister's name and name learning Doug's brother's name.
The question, does Mrs. Baker change, or does Holling?
At the end of the evening I shared with them some of the concerns that have been brought up on this list serve. They were astonished.
There are so many ways to look at an extraordinary book.
