A title that I don't remember seeing mentioned was
_The Off Season_, sequel to _Dairy Queen_. I enjoyed the story and learning more about the characters from the first novel.

Encouraged by comments from others on this thread, I found Seeger's _First the Egg_ at a local bookstore and thought it was stunning -- minimalist text, but with a smooth flow, and striking illustrations with a very clever use of die-cuts.

Curtis's _Elijah of Buxton_ worked on multiple levels
-- as story, as informational work, and as illuminating an historical period. (I'd recently reread Lester's _Day of Tears_ and immediately thought how well this would pair with it, showing life from the perspective of those who'd managed to escape.) Initially, I thought the last chapters of the book seemed out of place, a way of trying to wrap things up more dramatically, but in retrospect, they deepen the story. (I don't want to be more specific for fear of spoiling it.)

Mixed reactions to Konigsburg's _The Mysterious Edge of the Heroic World_ -- the beginning chapters seemed somewhat disconnected (which I understand thematically, but it left me wondering how well readers unfamiliar with Konigsburg would react). The last half turned into a gripping story, though I must have missed something because I still don't understand part of the ending. (If there's anyone else who's read it, I'd love to ask about it off-list.)
