[CCBC-Net] Wednesday Wars

I also enjoyed Wednesday Wars; in 1967-68, I was an 8th grader, so there was a lot I could relate to in the story. I did wonder about the asbestos reference, because I didn't think that came up until the '70s.

But, the baseball salary reference, etc. is right on, and stars were much more accessible then, especially at something like Mrs. Baker's family sporting goods store.

I didn't want to get into picking apart the book, but a couple of things that bothered me were the Presbyterian references (when was I told it was okay to lie like that?), but Schmidt is at Calvin College, after all.

The US Women's Olympic team got the bronze, not silver, at the Melbourne Olympics in the 4 x 100, and the team included Wilma Rudolph. I would have enjoyed a reference to her.

I did know teenagers who were into the Monkees then. Your mention of the Beatles brought some interesting searches, including this http://www.beatlesource.com/TV/index.html Lots of clips are on youtube!

It wouldn't bother me if Schmidt got the Newbery. Just a few days after the announcement, he is scheduled to be here in Indianapolis at the annual children's literature conference. http://www.butler.edu/childlit/
