I grew up in Plainview, LI, five miles from Gary Schmidt who was in Hicksville, and my Jewish friends made up a very large portion of my classes. Those of us attending Catechism seemed to make up the rest. I vividly recall being, perhaps, in second grade and having a classmate trying to explain to me that she was Lutheran. At that point I had not heard of anybody being anything other than Catholic or Jewish.
