I'm adding two more favorites that have not yet been mentioned. The picture book is GIMME ME CRACKED CORN AND I WILL SHARE by Kevin O'Malley is hilarious! Lend an ear to all the corn pone puns and clever illustration techniques that will produce more than a few grains of laugh-out-loud moments.
For novels, BONE BY BONE BY BONE by Tony JOhnston is a haunting story of racism in the south in the 1950s when a white boy and his black friend have their eyes opened to the reality of racism. Is David's father, the respected doctor in the small town, a member of the Klan? Family secrets, boyhood friendship, and racially motivated violence come to a head like a fistula.
Happy New Year everyone,
Julie Cummins Former Coordinator of Children's Services, The New York Public Library Children's book reviewer and author
